The “Live Like Jack” award is presented annually to a Dor-Wood member OR to a Jr. Optimist Club Advisor who demonstrates Optimist qualities that longtime member Jack Akerman displayed during his 52 years as a member of the club.

·       Jack loved working with others to promote Optimism in all settings.

·       Jack volunteered for every project and duty that Dor-Wood offered.

·       Jack was encouraging to all youth and fellow members.

·       Jack was instrumental in establishing many new Junior Optimist and College Clubs.

·       Jack promoted advancement among Dor-Wood members by conducting the Optimist Personal Growth and Involvement
        program.

·       Jack served as Dor-Wood President as well as Ohio District Lt. Governor and is a member of the Ohio District Optimist Hall of
        Fame.

·       Jack Akerman served as a strong mentor to fellow Dor-Wood members. He continually monitored, critiqued, made
suggestions and recommendations that were always in the best interest of the youth we serve.

·       Jack was a profoundly serious Optimist and had a wonderful sense of humor that added to the fun of being a Dor-Wood
member. He was a joy to be around.

·       Jack lived the Optimist Creed, always verbalizing health, happiness, and prosperity in his conversations with youth and
        adults.

In summary, Jack Akerman epitomized the tenets of the Optimist Creed and lived that oath throughout his life as a Dor-Wood member.

The Akerman family will provide an individual award to the recipient as well as a monetary donation to a Junior Optimist fund which will help support Jr. Optimists attending the Ohio District Convention or Optimist International Convention.

Nominations from the Dor-Wood membership may be submitted to the “Live Like Jack” selection committee.

The Recipient will be selected by the committee and presented to the Dor-Wood Board for approval.

The award will be presented at a Dor-Wood Thursday noon meeting in the spring.
Jr. Optimist members and advisors will be invited to attend that meeting and award presentation.
